What We Find in Shopify Stores That Were Already Built

Most stores we take over are not broken. They load, they take orders, and nothing in the admin looks wrong. The damage is in the data underneath — empty fields, dead redirects, automations reporting Active while sending nothing.

Every figure below is one we measured on a real store. Clients are named where they have agreed to it; where a finding spans several stores, or the store has not been asked, it stays unattributed rather than guessed at.

Two catalogues, rebuilt

Hey Jimmy — camera and imaging retailer

2,686 active products, 178 brands, moved from WooCommerce

2,377
Products with no SEO title
2,354
Products with no SEO description
2,686
Products with no product type
675
Dead URLs still earning clicks
  • Product type written to 2,663 products across 57 types, verified by re-dumping and diffing the catalogue. 23 genuine oddballs left empty rather than guessed.
  • SEO title and description written to 2,415 products at a real 60-character budget, including 38 promotional titles rewritten before Merchant Center flagged them.
  • Theme title suffix dropped on product pages only, returning 13 characters to every product title while collections and blog keep the brand.

Still open: Brand collections and the 675-URL redirect map are scoped and costed, not yet applied.

Pro Audio Brands — pro-audio equipment dealer

Fabricated review claims on product pages
  • Full catalogue rebuilt: SEO title, description and product type on all 733 active products across 20 types.
  • 15 brand collections built as automated collections on the vendor field, with a Brands menu and redirects from the old brand URLs — then published, because API-created collections stay unpublished and 404 until you do.
  • A fabricated “rated 4.5/5 from 650+ reviews” strip with stock-photo avatars removed from every product page. A real review app was already installed and rendering underneath it.
  • Theme fault fixed that was truncating every hand-written meta description at 152 characters.

Still open: A price audit we raised and have not been asked to action: 190 variants unpriced for over twelve months, one listed in the wrong currency, eight with an inverted compare-at price.

The redirect map

675 dead URLs, still earning 67% of the clicks

When this store moved off WooCommerce, nobody built a redirect map. The old paths kept their rankings and started serving 404s. Every row below is a page Google still sends people to.

Matching is on model tokens, not fuzzy similarity — at a 0.82 similarity cutoff the matcher paired a Nikon Z6 III with a Z7 II and a 35mm lens with an 85mm. The ones that genuinely need a human decision are handed back as a list, not guessed.

The catalogue of findings

Grouped by where the fault lives. Each one is a symptom you can check for yourself, what is actually causing it, and what we do about it.

Product data that was never filled in

The most common finding, and the least visible. Nothing looks broken, so nobody checks — while every listing competes on Google's guess of what the product is.

A migrated or agency-built store typically ships with the SEO title, SEO description and product type empty on 90 to 100% of products. Google falls back to the raw product title and its own guess at the category.

We dump the catalogue to measure the real gap, then write a product type and a title and description to the actual character budget for every product — reading and keeping any copy a human already wrote.

2,377 of 2,686 products had no SEO title on Hey Jimmy (heyjimmy.in).

Damage left behind by a platform move

Moving to Shopify is where most of the lasting harm happens, and it is invisible in the admin because the new store looks perfect.

Google Shopping problems with no dashboard warning

The failures that cost the most are the ones Merchant Center does not flag at all.

Checkout and recovery that quietly does nothing

Automations that report Active while sending nothing at all. We check these on every store we take on.

Theme faults that eat the work you paid for

Where hand-written content gets silently truncated, translated or shrunk by the theme rendering it.
